Capacity Building Programme on diplomacy for countries from the ASEAN Region

The French National Museum for Natural History with the financial support of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition in close collaboration with the Embassy of France to Malaysia and the “Alliance Française” in Kuala Lumpur, organized a regional training on diplomacy for countries from the ASEAN Region. Representatives of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore participated in the training that took place from 22-24 January 2024.

Han de Koeijer, CEBioS staff member and EU negotiator for the EU and its Member States on the topic during COP15, was invited to give the practical part of the training with regards the negotiations during SBSTTA, SBI and the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The participants learned to prepare national and regional positions, to give the national statements, intervene during the negotiations of Conference Room (CRP) and Legal (L) papers. The knowledge management component for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was used as example. This will assist the countries to prepare for the forthcoming SBSTTA and SBI negotiations that will take place in Nairobi, Kenya from 13 – 29 May 2024.
