Mme. Judith Tsongo Mukongoli est chercheuse au Centre de Surveillance de la Biodiversité (CSB), de l’Université de Kisangani.

Pourriez-vous décrire brièvement votre expertise et votre emploi actuel ?

Botaniste de formation, je me lance dans l’étude sur les plantes exotiques envahissantes de mon pays, la RDC. Actuellement, j’occupe le grade d’Attachée de Recherche (ATTR) à l’UNIKIS et supervise la bibliothèque et le site web du CSB.

À quelle activité liée à CEBioS et/ou financée par CEBioS avez-vous participé ?

Je suis bénéficiaire d’un financement de CEBioS pour mon projet: “Diversité, Caractéristique écologique et Distribution des Espèces des Plantes Invasives en République Démocratique du Congo“. J’ai également participé à l’atelier de formation pour les projets ‘Indicateurs pour la Politique‘ qui avait eu lieu à Grand Popo au Bénin du 19 au 23 janvier 2026.

Quels sont les principaux défis auxquels vous êtes confrontée dans votre carrière professionnelle et pour lesquels CEBioS pourrait faire une différence significative ?

J’ai longtemps été mise à l’écart pour les travaux de terrain sous prétexte que je suis une femme et de surcroît une mère. Pour dire que la femme est incapable de réaliser certaines tâches.

Comment CEBioS a-t-il contribué à relever ce défi ?

Aujourd’hui, grâce à CEBioS, toutes les personnes qui ne croyaient pas en moi ont compris que je n’étais pas ce qu’ils pensaient. CEBioS m’a donné une nouvelle image dans mon institution, tous me voient et me respectent à cause de ce que je suis actuellement en train de faire grâce à CEBioS. Je me sens valorisée et utile. C’est un coup de pouce qu’il me fallait pour entrer dans le monde de la recherche scientifique et avec un sujet qui me passionne en plus. Je pense même évoluer dans ce domaine pour mon master et ma thèse.

Avez-vous des souhaits pour l’avenir en ce qui concerne votre partenariat avec CEBioS ?
Mon souhait est que vous continuiez à renforcer les capacités de ceux et celles qui veulent apprendre. Oui, le droit d’apprendre est un droit humain fondamental et universel, garanti légalement sans discrimination. L’apprentissage développe le potentiel humain et aide à lutter contre la pauvreté!

Ms. Judith Tsongo Mukongoli is a researcher at the Biodiversity Monitoring Center (CSB) at the University of Kisangani.

Could you briefly describe your expertise and your current job?

As a trained botanist, I am working on a study of invasive exotic plants in my country, the DRC. I currently hold the position of Research Assistant (ATTR) at UNIKIS and supervise the CSB library and website.

What CEBioS-related and/or CEBioS-funded activity have you participated in?

I am a recipient of CEBioS funding for my project: “Diversité, Caractéristique écologique et Distribution des Espèces des Plantes Invasives en République Démocratique du Congo” I also participated in the training workshop for the “Indicators for Policy” projects, which took place in Grand Popo, Benin, from January 19 to 23, 2026.

What are the main challenges you face in your professional career and where CEBioS could make a significant difference?

For a long time, I was sidelined from fieldwork on the pretext that I am a woman and, moreover, a mother. Claiming that women are incapable of performing certain tasks.

How did CEBioS help you meet this challenge?

Today, thanks to CEBioS, all the people who didn’t believe in me have realized that I’m not what they thought I was. CEBioS has given me a new image in my institution; everyone sees me and respects me because of what I’m currently doing, thanks to CEBioS. I feel valued and useful. It’s the boost I needed to enter the world of scientific research, and with a subject that I’m passionate about too. I’m even thinking of pursuing this field for my master’s degree and thesis.

Do you have any wishes for the future regarding your partnership with CEBioS?

My wish is that you continue to build the capacities of those who want to learn. Yes, the right to learn is a fundamental and universal human right, legally guaranteed without discrimination. Learning develops human potential and helps fight poverty!

Mevrouw Judith Tsongo Mukongoli is onderzoeker bij het Centrum voor Biodiversiteitsmonitoring (CSB) aan de Universiteit van Kisangani.

Kunt u kort uw expertise en uw huidige functie beschrijven?

Als getraind botanicus ben ik bezig met een onderzoek naar invasieve exotische planten in mijn land, de DRC. Momenteel werk ik als onderzoeksassistent (ATTR) bij UNIKIS en houd ik toezicht op de CSB-bibliotheek en –website.

Aan welke activiteiten die verband houden met CEBioS en/of door CEBioS worden gefinancierd, heeft u deelgenomen?

Ik ontvang CEBioS-financiering voor mijn project: “Diversité, Caractéristique écologique et Distribution des Espèces des Plantes Invasives en République Démocratique du Congo”. Daarnaast heb ik deelgenomen aan de trainingsworkshop voor de “Indicators for Policy”-projecten, die van 19 tot 23 januari 2026 plaatsvond in Grand Popo, Benin.

Wat zijn de belangrijkste uitdagingen waarmee u in uw professionele carrière wordt geconfronteerd en waar zou CEBioS een aanzienlijk verschil kunnen maken?

Lange tijd werd ik uitgesloten van veldwerk onder het voorwendsel dat ik een vrouw ben, en bovendien moeder. Onder het idee dat vrouwen niet in staat zijn om bepaalde taken uit te voeren.

Hoe heeft CEBioS u geholpen om deze uitdaging aan te gaan?

Dankzij CEBioS hebben alle mensen die niet in mij geloofden, nu ingezien dat ik niet ben wie zij dachten dat ik was. CEBioS heeft mij een nieuw imago gegeven binnen mijn instelling; iedereen ziet mij en respecteert mij vanwege wat ik momenteel doe dankzij CEBioS. Ik voel mij gewaardeerd en nuttig. Het is de stimulans die ik nodig had om de wereld van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek te betreden, en dat met een onderwerp waar ik ook nog eens gepassioneerd over ben. Ik overweeg zelfs om dit vakgebied te volgen voor mijn masteropleiding en scriptie.

Heeft u wensen voor de toekomst rond uw samenwerking met CEBioS?

Mijn wens is dat jullie doorgaan met het versterken van de capaciteiten van mensen die willen leren. Ja, het recht op onderwijs is een fundamenteel en universeel mensenrecht, dat wettelijk is gegarandeerd zonder discriminatie. Onderwijs ontwikkelt het menselijk potentieel en draagt bij aan de bestrijding van armoede.
